The FISA Amendments Act of 2008 is in part a reaction to the lawsuits brought against various telecommunications companies that complied with the various Internet "wiretaps" implemented under the Bush administration in the wake of the September, 2001, attacks. The amendments to FISA made in 2008 enable easier government access to personal information stored "in the cloud," and also provides immunity against being sued by their customers to U.S. companies when they comply with legal *AND* illegal surveillance requests. Without the amendments made in 2008, FISA provides sufficient capabilities to the government; there is no need to extend them any further.
