The Obama administration is proposing to purchase $433 million in experimental smallpox vaccine from Siga Technologies. This smallpox vaccine is untested and not needed as the United States currently has a stockpile and the only known smallpox still in existence is in a freezer in Russia. Additionally, it is extraordinarily expensive, over $250/dose and has a shelf life of 38 days! This is an unnecessary expense that the United States should not incur.
