On December 29, 1890 a group of more than 500 soldiers, near Wounded Knee Cr., were escorting a group of Native Americans to a reservation in South Dakota. After camping with the Native Americans for one night the order was given to disarm the Native Americans. After the disarming there was a misunderstanding and the soldiers open fire on the Native Americans. The soldiers killed unarmed women and children along with the few men in the group. There was such poor planning and confusion that 64 soldiers were wounded or killed by their fellow soldiers.
Twenty Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers at Wounded Knee, the most at one time.These medals take away from the brave people who have actually earned the Medal of Honor. These citations disgrace the true meaning of the Medal of Honor.
