Recent changes to Army Regulation 670-1 prohibit currently serving Soldiers as well as future Soldiers from receiving tattoos that extend below the elbow and below the knee. It has been stated by senior Army leaders that these types of tattoos present an unprofessional appearance and detract from the professionalism of the uniformed service. This petetion is intended to highlight the fact that tattoos are not only a popular form of free speech but a decades long tradition among US Servicemembers. To state that tattoos are unprofessional is to state that generations of Americans, both citizen Soldiers and career Soldiers, who served in defense of this country were unprofessional and unworthy of serving in today's Army. The Department of the Army should rescind the prohibitions stated above.
