People with severe persistent mental illness should not have the right to refuse medication. With the closing of MICA programs and other mental health facilities there is a greater threat and danger to society by mentally ill people who are not taking medication. As a mental health worker I have seen harm to others including family members and the public at large as a result of mentally ill refusing medication. There needs to be consequences for refusing medication including long term hospitalization if needed despite the cost.
AOT monitoring isn't sufficient and the recidivism rate of non-compliance and refusing medication is very high. If cost is the reason, has anyone made a comparison of what it costs to Have AOT services verses long term care?
