There are a few problems associated with overpopulation, such as lack of food and utilities. Imagine if there was a way to slow and eventually stop this problem without ending millions of lives. With environment engineering it is possible. if the moon is 1/6 the size of earth then it stands to reason given the correct factors it could hold 1/6 of the earth's population easily! The same concept applies to Mars. Imagine in 20 to 50 years when interstellar travel will be as cheap as an airplane ride and you can visit you parents on Mars! That would be awesome.
