Reseed the National Highway System and Interstate Highway System's road verge with carbon sequestering miscanthus

The United States is home to 161,000 miles of national highways and 48,000 miles of interstate highways. Most of these highways are lined with verge – that is, grass on either side of the road and in the dividing area between opposing lanes of traffic. Presently, most of this verge consists of common grass, which is of little more than aesthetic value. We propose that this verge be reseeded with varieties of miscanthus, a grass known for its powerful carbon sequestering properties. The threat of climate change cannot be understated. 80% of U.S. counties have experienced climate disasters in the last three years. Planting miscanthus en masse across the nation can be a valuable step in combatting this threat.
