Title 4 Ch. 1 § 7 of the US Code states:
The Flag should be flown at half-staff:
"...upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries...or the death of a member of the Armed Forces...who dies while serving on active duty."
The recent events in Connecticut were tragic, and the victims should be in the thoughts of us all as we mourn their loss.
However, the tradition of flying our flag at half-staff was established to honor the gov't officials and members of the Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Please respect this tradition and preserve the honor that is due to our nation's heroes.
