We need an official will and commitment to disengage and bring our brave troops home as quickly as possible. Once we have articulated that, we can set a timeline and start the process of disconnecting from this adventure and beginning an orderly withdrawal, which is widely believed will take about a year. If we begin this process now, we could conceivably bring home a large portion of troops by the end of this year and the rest by the middle or fall of next year. Our returning troops and their families must be given high-quality benefits through the VA: medical and psychological care, job training and placement, educational opportunities and economic assistance. They have risked their lives for us and now they need to come home and be treated with care and respect.
