Public references to a monotheistic male God exclude the faiths of Americans who revere male and female divinity such as the indigenous religions of Africa, Asia and the Americas, Neo-Pagans, and those who believe God has no gender, as well as agnostics and atheists.
Conceptualizing God as a masculine authority weakens the ability of all genders to be treated equally in the eyes of the law, as would be the case for all races if our government officials made references to “God the White.”
Invoking “God” and “His people” (as was heard in the President’s 2013 Inaugural Address) or “God the Father” reinforces a patriarchal paradigm which impedes the civil rights and opportunities of Americans of all genders and violates the spirit of the establishment clause of the First Amendmen
