First, we are asking the President to use his bully pulpit, the best platform to advocate for a position, for extra pressure on the House to take up a vote on the extension of unemployment benefits for 2.8 million Americans. This extension was passed as a bipartisan bill in the Senate on the fourth vote and, therefore, it is clearly an issue of great importance. Seven moderate House Republicans have petitioned House Speaker John Boehner to consider the bill or a similar measure but Speaker Boehner left for a two-week break that will add to the seventeen weeks that the long term unemployed have been waiting. Second, if the House refuses to consider it we respectfully ask that the President consider issuing an Executive Order to extend this vital lifeline to millions diligently seeking work.
