The bulk collection of telecom data, even when used to protect, violates human rights and devalues the security of the US. The NSA collects 200M SMS texts and 500B pieces of metadata per day, and 120M phone numbers a year. It isn’t clear which attacks the program thwarted nor the role the program played and the NSA may have used the data to help investigate community organizers. Whistleblowers who have come forward to detail abuses of power have been charged under the Espionage Act more than all other administrations before this combined. Spying on world leaders who are our allies undermines the political currency of the US. The gov’t should repudiate its prior defense of the NSA bulk data collection and end its dragnet style of data sweeps it is apparently using.
