After completing public schools young adults with disabilities live with parents who usually work outside the home. Physical, mental or emotional limitations may prevent them from being candidates for sheltered workshops. Without local community adult day services programs group homes and other institutions are the next stop for these Americans.
When an older adult becomes at risk of self neglect because of physical, mental or emotional limitations the next step does not have to be to the nursing home or to assisted living.
Once a disabled adult leaves his or her community their social, spiritual and community life they have always known ends. The community they lived in does not retain the contribution he or she made to the local economy.
