The Voting Rights Act of 1965 made it illegal for states to use any means to deny American people their right to vote. It gave the Federal government oversight over Southern States to ensure African American citizens were not held back from voting. Many people, including MLK, died in the Civil Rights movement that focused greatly on granting unconditional voting access for all citizens.
In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down a key part of the act. They struck down Federal oversight of states' processes. Now, states have created "Voter ID Laws" - making it mandatory for citizens to show their ID to vote. However, many, many poor, sick, elderly and homeless Americans, do not have the privileged access to that.
We the people call on Congress to restore the law to its original state.
