Railroads are by far the most energy-efficient form of transportation known to Humanity. The United States was once the world leader in rail transportation, both passenger and freight, and the greatest innovator in railroad technology, as evidenced by George Westinghouse's air brakes, and Eli Janney's automatic couplers.
Yet our Federal transportation policy remains tilted to favor airlines, interstate trucking, and automobiles, with the result that vast amounts of fossil fuels are wasted on long car trips and "short hop" airline flights between places better served by rail (in some cases wasting passenger time as well, leaving them sitting in airports for longer than the rail trip time.
I call upon you to keep your campaign promise, and support Amtrak and high speed rail.
