H.R. 1489: Return to Prudent Banking Act of 2011
112th Congress: 2011-2012
To repeal certain provisions of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and revive the separation between commercial banking and the securities business, in the manner provided in the Banking Act of 1933, the so-called "Glass-Steagall Act", and for other purposes.
Banking lobbyists managed to repeal this post Great Depression law around 1999. You can see what that got us. The whole world is in a state of financial ruin. Our economy remained stable from 1933 until 2000. This act forced normal banks to be seperated from gambling style investment banks. Leveraging our deposits and using that to make risky bets on things like financial derivatives caused the first Great Depession and the one we are experiencing now.
