Restoring Memorial Day to its traditional date 30 May would help bring the holiday back to its intended purpose. Memorial Day should not be degraded to an excuse for more sales, beer tents, and bad back yard cooking, but it should be as President Lincoln put it “that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion” and remember them.
