E pluribus unum (Out of many, one) was adopted by Congress in 1782 and was our motto until 1956 when Congress added "In God We Trust." Because ours is a secular (non-sectarian) nation, and the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States mandates: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," a religious slogan or mention of any particular deity on our currency is inappropriate and unconstitutional.
