In response to Sen. Joseph McCarthy's persecution of "Communists", the Congress adopted the current motto of "In God we trust" in 1956. As our country was never intended to be established as a nation beholden to any one particular religious tradition, and as our nation becomes more diverse, it makes more sense to remove the motto inspired by a fear-monger and instate the motto that the Founders of our nation would be more inclined to adopt if they were with us today. E pluribus unum, which is found on the Great Seal, means "Out of many, one:" a more perfect motto for a more perfect union.
