The founding fathers of the United States understood that in order for citizens to enjoy true religious freedom the government must not have the right to prefer some religions over others or to prefer theistic beliefs over atheistic beliefs. The First Amendment was added to the Constitution to protect every American's freedom to decide his or her own religious beliefs without any preferential influence by the government.
The government infringed that religious freedom when it amended the Pledge of Allegiance in the 1950s. Before then the Pledge of Allegiance was not biased for or against religious belief. Since then, generations of children have been forced to recite in public school that God exists and is above our nation.
This petition would restore the original Pledge of Allegiance.
