Prior to the year 2012, commuters where allowed through payroll deductions to have up to $230.00 per month set aside for commuter costs. This pre tax deduction benefited the workers as well as the employers with above average savings. The tax deduction for people who drive and park their cars near train or bus stations was sustained at the $230.00 level for life. The transit benefit should be treated the same way. The benefits should be linked. Mass transit commuters reduce car emissions, congestion and add to employment.
