Main street banking has become a peripheral activity for US financial institutions to the detriment of customers seeking effective retail banking. This creates an opportunity to revive the USPS Savings System closed in 1967 and extend its services to include checking accounts and lending all under restrictions similar to those previously imposed on all banks by the Glass Steagall Act. This would address and possibly reverse the USPS cash flow problems and benefit the US treasury.
