After the Umpqua Community College evidence was found suggesting that the shooter, Chris Harper Mercer, was motivated at least in part by a desire for attention. A statement on his social media page from before the incident says, "When they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are...Seems the more people you kill, the more you're in the limelight." In light of this, it's shocking and horrifying to see the speed and enthusiasm with which major news networks such as CNN were ready to provide personal information about Harper.
I'm proposing a government-imposed limit on media coverage of school shooters, restricting the distribution of the identity of the shooter until a full police investigation of the incident is completed.
