Restrict employers from making applicants disclose misdemeanors older than 5 years and felonies older than 10 years.

Created by L.M. on November 19, 2014

While it is important to know who you are hiring, it has proven to be a hindrance to many who have been convicted of a crime at some point in their lives. Our disciplinary system is based on the premise of "rehabilitation" so if these individuals have been rehabilitated, why is it so hard for them to find gainful employment after they have been incarcerated? Currently it is illegal to deny someone employment solely based on their criminal history but many employers do it and it is very hard to prove. Therefore the practice of weeding out the honest applicants who willingly disclose this information has become all too common. If this block were changed, not only would we be doing a wonderful service to those who are unemployed or underemployed but to our economy as a whole.
