Restrict the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in electrical and electronic equipment.
Lead damages the nervous system, causes brain disorders, and birth defects. Mercury causes damage to the brain, kidney, and lungs. The inhalation of fine dust and fumes of cadmium can lead to chemical pneumonitis, pulmonary edema, and death.
Hexavalent chromium compounds are genotoxic carcinogens, specifically lung cancer.
PBB can cause weight loss, skin disorders, nervous and immune systems effects, as well as effects on liver, kidneys, and thyroid. PBDEs impairs development of the nervous system and thyroid.
