The current framework of the US biomedical research enterprise is no longer sustainable.
Corrective action is direly needed to improve its shortage of innovation, diversion of research funds from science to institutional infrastructure and salaries, and the use of trainees as cheap labor.
This has been carefully analyzed in the Biomedical Research Workforce Working Group Report commissioned by the NIH in 2012 (http://acd.od.nih.gov/Biomedical_research_wgreport.pdf), and numerous published articles, including most recently by Henry Bourne (http://elife.elifesciences.org/content/2/e00642 and references therein).
Here, we petition the administration to implement these corrective actions, including the creation of a public forum for further discussion by scientists, universities, and NIH.
