The use of liquid fluoride thorium reactors (LFTRs) will allow for many technological, environmental, and business advancements in the United States. Some of these benefits are as follows: no longer would the United States rely on China for Rare Earth minerals, LFTRs are passively safe due to the nature of the liquid which, in the event of a power loss (like the one that happened at Fukushima Daiichi) the reactor would shut itself down with no operator action, and using Thorium for the fuel in a reactor makes it nearly impossible to use the nuclear material for proliferation purposes. The nuclear waste from LFTRs is short lived, and exponentially less than that produced in conventional reactors in common use throughout the United States today.
