The Telegraph recently published an article stating that US schools have been ordered to drop "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Catcher in the Rye," and other works of classic literature from their curriculum in favor of insulation manuals and plant inventories "in an effort to ready pupils for the workplace."
We wish to petition the Obama administration to rethink and remedy this error.
Literature encourages innovation. If not for science fiction, would we have flip phones, iPads, or Skype? Keep the classics in school, and encourage other genres.
Having said this, our students do need to learn about the workplace, so we recommend the addition of new classes to high schools, such as financial literacy, career planning, and international trade, among others.
We are people, not worker bees.
