From the most recent sources, it costs the united states 1.83 cents to make each penny, and 11.18 cents to make each nickle. From a practical standpoint continuing to print these coins is nothing put a drain on the economy. It cost the U.S. mint 55 million dollars subsidize these pennies. The United States could save around 100 million dollars a year if these two coins where taken of of service, or if the materials they are made of where switched to something more representative of their value.
