Pennies are less valuable every year because of inflation. It costs the United States 1.8 cents to make one penny, more than the coin is actually worth. The U.S. Mint produces 7 million pennies each year, which costs 100 million dollars. Australia, New Zealand, Finland, The Netherlands, and Canada have retired the penny. Cash transactions would be rounded to the nearest five cents. The United States already did this with the half-cent coin in 1857 because it was worth too little. The American military has already retired the penny as well and rounds to the nearest five cents. No one can buy anything with pennies any more. Pennies only end up in couch cushions and jars, never to actually be used. They are worth too little to spend more on, especially when the national debt is so high.
