Retirement Vesting through employment should be no longer than one year. Companies vesting periods are too long.

Created by M.C. on January 29, 2014

Companies can set a long vesting period for the retirement savings that they contribute. If you work for a company and they lay you off before you are vested, you keep the funds you put in but lose the company's contribution. I work for a school district that has an eight year vesting period. What if they lay me off after 7 years? I would lose a substantial amount of money that I was counting on using in my retirement years. Why shouldn't I be entitled to keep those contributions for each year I would have worked there? I can agree with a one year vesting period but no more than that. With companies downsizing due to the unfortunate economic conditions, vesting will affect the retirement savings of anyone who has not reached their required period.
