We urge this administration to take a stand against the current trend of test-based evaluation of students, teachers and administrators. Yes, we need data, but students and communities are more nuanced and complex than simple data. We need to acknowledge that "common" and "standard" are not descriptors that we want applied to the American people.
Put the control of education back in the hands of people who know the students and their needs best. Then use the Federal Government's resources and influence to address issues of inequity that are caused by social and economic barriers and build support structures for lower income schools. Our current system is simply growing this divide. We must begin to close this divide with nuance, innovation and empathy, not bubbling in answers.
