For millennia the people of Alaska have called their greatest Mountain Denali. Then in 1897, in far off Washington, the name was changed to McKinley. By 1980 it had become clear that the National Park formed around the great Mountain's base must be changed to Denali. And now it is only right that the Mountain get its name back.
This petition has been started by the families of the first team to climb Denali. We do so in the memory of Walter Harper, Alaska Native and first man to stand on the top; who went not in the spirit of conquest but for the future of his People.
"There is...a certain ruthless arrogance...that... contemptuously ignores the native names, almost always appropriate & significant, & overlays them with names, that are...neither the one nor the other…” ~Hudson Stuck 1914
