The Pledge of Allegiance was never created to combine religion with government. It's an show of loyalty our nation's flag and our country.
It was created it 1892 and since then there have been 5 versions of the Pledge. It wasn't until 1954 that "under God" was added to it. The 4th version (1924-1954) goes: "I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands; one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
I understand non-Christians being upset about the "God" line the recent version, but to abolish the Pledge as a whole rather than using a previous version or creating a new one has been viewed by many American's as a lack of loyalty to the country by those who govern it.
