The American Dream is dead. One could argue that it never existed. Since the beginning of our country, any "outsider" has been oppressed, mistreated, and exploited. Be they Black, Irish, Catholic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Mexican, Muslim, Syrian, etc. Any group of poor, non-white non-Protestant people who have left their country for a better life in America has had their turn to be discriminated against. While it may not always be as overt as slavery, segregation, Jim Crow, Japanese internment camps during WWII, Operation Wetback and the repatriation act, etc voter suppression of poor and minority voters, etc., America has a long history of treating "outsiders" with distrust and disdain. And all the while boasts of being a melting pot where all are welcome. That is hypocrisy.
