Whereas the Statue of Liberty was graciously given to the United States in 1886 in recognition of the unequaled welcoming spirit of the American people, and whereas this welcoming spirit is increasingly under attack by a significant percentage of our citizens and public officials, we petition to have it returned to France until such time that this welcoming spirit regains its rightful place in American sentiment and policy.
