For those who don't know, National Security Letters (NSLs) are given out to organizations to force organizations to reveal information on persons of interests in regards to terrorism. However, these NSLs come with gag orders in place, forbidding these companies from talking about it or even challenging them in court. Thus, we don't know the numbers or really anything about how the government uses these NSLs. Recent reports suggest widespread abuse by the FBI and homeland security.
My proposal is simple. The Obama administration has preached transparency as part of it's campaign promise. Revealing the number of NSLs given out annually will allow the public to know what their government is up to, and it won't threaten national security.
