The Department of the Interior through the Bureau of Land Management set forth a final proposal on shale oil exploration on public lands. During the Bush administration, a plan was prepared for large-scale exploration and scientific development to analyze the potential of various public lands for shale oil drilling. In a time when the United States is going through major oil shortages and gasoline prices are at an all-time high, the Obama administration has decided to curtail that proposal by more than half, removing more than 1.6 million acres. The BLM cites environmental concerns in their decision; however, the US is at a critical point in foreign policy where economic independence from the Middle East is paramount. Shale development is crucial to the future of US energy independence.
