The Secretary of Health and Human Services' decision to overrule a recommendation from the FDA and medical experts to remove a restriction on the emergency contraceptive Plan B® is wrong . This action is neither based on sound science nor the best interest of women’s health. Access to such medication is denied to a teenager without parental consent, even in cases of incest or violence in the home. The decision increases the risk of unintended pregnancy. Abortions will continue to increase, exposing women to greater risks both medically and emotionally. A woman’s right to make her own health care decisions has been ignored. All young women should be given access to emergency contraception. We urge you to consult women and consider their rights more carefully in the future.
