'E pluribus unum' - 'out of many, one' was the national motto from 1782 until 1956 when it was changed to 'in God we trust'. The current motto alienates many in our society who are not monotheists, as well as those who believe strongly that the wall separating church and state should be strongly upheld. Our original motto celebrates the American tradition of diversity, democracy and unity, and we should work toward being an inclusive nation and not an exclusive one.
