"E Pluribus Unum" which means "From the many (become) one" was the national motto until 1956 when President Eisenhower changed the motto to "In God we trust." This was a change done during the Cold War to show that we would defeat the Soviet Union based on our faith in "God." This slogan no longer is relevant in today's society and should revert back to a slogan that does not alienate the growing number of agnostic and atheist Americans, and well as members of other religions who do not believe in a Christian "God."
