Death benefits for Social Security were calculated in 1933 at $255. The average year salary at the time. As of 2015, the average funeral is $7500. We believe it is time for Social Security to review the benefits paid to thei survivors to assist with death expenses to help with burial costs. The range suggested is between $2000 and $7500. At minimum SS should cover a cremation which costs $1700.
