Puppy mill is the common name for businesses that breed animals and provide pet stores with puppies to be sold at high prices. The parents are often poorly cared for and bred repeatedly. They are caged throughout their entire lives leading to disease and deformities, then cruelly discarded when they are no longer profitable. Many dogs may be stuffed into one cage with no room to move. The puppies are often unhealthy due to the poor conditions of the parents. This frequently leads to the puppies being abandoned to shelters or on the streets because the new owner is unable to afford the medical bills required for a poorly bred animal. Better regulations and requirements, as well as inspections, would relieve some of the over-crowding in our shelters.
