More than a hundred detainees remain held on U.S. soil at Guantanamo Bay, many for over a decade now. This is more than sufficient time to determine whether these individuals should be tried for crimes or otherwise released.
Some of these detainees may indeed be guilty of horrific crimes and deserving of detention. If this is the case, however, certain fundamental principles of justice must first be met.
As members of the global community, we demand that the United States provide these detainees with formal charges they can answer to and the means to defend themselves against those charges at a public trial held on a date certain. Absent this most basic level of justice, the detainees should be released.
