Direct Entry Midwives are entrusted with helping laboring mothers and newborn babies, but have little to no accountability for their actions. They are not required to carry malpractice insurance so if they negligently cause a death they are difficult to sue, and impossible to collect from. When midwives break the law they just move to another state (like Valerie El Halta did after repeated negligence).
NARM (North American Registry of Midwives) REFUSES to release their data about the death rate in out of hospital births. It must be pretty bad for them to hide it for so many years. They also fail to hold midwives accountable for preventable deaths.
This profession desperately needs federal oversight to protect women and newborns. State legislation has failed to address the problem.
