The subsidy system has created a shocking imbalance not only in the world supply and demand for these crops, but has significant and detrimental effects on the natural environment. Large producers are often the only beneficiaries of this system which began in the Great Depression as a temporary measure to stabilise the economy for small, local farmers. Cows raised on subsidised corn are having a significant impact on greenhouse gases and consumers are being drawn towards unhealthy low-cost alternatives to fresh produce which is contributing to the raising levels of obesity and heart disease.
