In an acute care setting or hospital most states recommend a 1:5 nurse patient ratio. There are no recommendations for nurse patient ratios in long term care. This setting usually has a 1:25 ratio at a minimum. This leaves too little time to accurately assess each patient leading to missed symptoms resulting in rehospitalizations. We need safer standards in this area.
