Creating a race categorization of the Hispanic/Latino population would yield a closer representation of self-identification and assist with the Census Bureau’s intent of “improving the accuracy and the reliability of census results by expanding our understanding of how people identify their race and Hispanic origin", as stated by Census Bureau Director Robert Graves in a May 6, 2012 ABC Univision article titled “Will Hispanics Be Undercounted in the Next Census?” written by Cristina Costantini.
The categorical conversion would not only yield a closer representation of self-identification, but consequently enhance Election data collected by the Census Bureau and provide a more accurate report of the voting influence which exists among the Hispanic/Latino population.
