There has been a national push from the Surgeon General to support breastfeeding [ http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/calls/breastfeeding/index.html ] & numbers are on the rise! But sadly the USA is at the bottom of the heap in first world countries when it comes to actually supporting those attempting to do what is best for their babies. Paternity/Maternity leave are abysmal. Laws protecting mothers' rights to breastfeed in public are sketchy at best & the cultural norm is to shame it. Six weeks of (usually unpaid) leave is barely enough time to get to know your new baby let alone be confident that breastfeeding is well established. The medical profession is lacking standards to be sure all mothers are receiving complete/accurate information. This ultimately helps healthcare costs!
