By keeping this severely dated institution in place, the popular vote is not always accurately represented. It also badly sways campaigning, leaving many states unreached by candidates. In light of the recent election, it is also clear that it cannot act as the safeguard against woefully unqualified candidates. The electoral college only serves to further muddy our democracy.
